About our Exeter Community Group

Our community groups are relaxed support groups helping connect and bring people living with diabetes together; helping them learn more about their condition and know they’re not on their own.

Groups are often run by a lead or group of volunteers who share tasks and activities. Our Exeter Community Group are looking for new volunteers who can help with running the group meetings, coffee mornings and social events.

What our group does:

• Coffee mornings • Online and Zoom meetings, often with healthcare guest speakers • Facebook, website and newsletter – the group has a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/DiabetesUKExeter/ and website page https://exeter.diabetesukgroup.org/ which are updated by volunteers • Keeping in touch with members by email or phone
• Raise awareness of our work • Advertising – promote meetings and volunteering roles • Fundraising – the group raise funds which are donated directly to the work of Professor Andrew Hattersley and his team at Exeter University.

You’ll be joining a group of friendly volunteers and use your energy, skills and ideas to make a real difference. You’ll also be supported by our staff team based at our Taunton office who’ll be on hand to help you settle in and provide ongoing support and training.

Main tasks and other activities:

• Organise and host community activities • Be the main point of contact • Advertise group activities

About you:

• You’re friendly and active and you like working with people from all backgrounds
• You enjoy organising and sharing out tasks and activities • You’re good with social media (optional)

What we can offer you:

• Play a role in helping people living with diabetes • Learn more about diabetes and Diabetes UK at our Induction and ongoing training • Regular contact with our friendly Diabetes UK South West team • Join our regional online volunteer coffee mornings, get-togethers, networking events and Knowing Diabetes sessions • South West Round Robin volunteer newsletter
• Experience of volunteering within the charity sector • Expenses, e.g. travel, lunch

For this role you’ll need to fill out our online Application Form, give 2 references and complete a Basic Criminal Record check. This is paid for by Diabetes UK.
